Province announces official air carrier for Access North

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced today Provincial Airlines Ltd. - Innu Mikun Airlines as the official air carrier for the Access North - Labrador 2002 celebrations. Premier Roger Grimes made the announcement in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, accompanied by Ernie McLean, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, and Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.

"Government is pleased the corporate community in Labrador continues to work in partnership with the people of Labrador to enhance the regions tourism product," said Premier Grimes. "This sponsorship by Provincial Airlines - Innu Mikun strengthens this positive working relationship to the benefit of Labradorians and the local tourism industry."

Provincial Airlines - Innu Mikuns commitment to Access North - Labrador 2002 includes a corporate contribution of $30,000, and special rates for travel associated with the celebrations events and programs. The Access North - Labrador 2002 logo will appear on six of the companys aircraft and on a variety of its promotional materials throughout the province, as well as Atlantic Canada.

"Provincial Airlines - Innu Mikun will play a major role in helping to develop the tourism industry in Labrador for years to come," said Minister McLean. "I congratulate the company on its initiatives, and welcome its involvement in this special celebration."

Access North - Labrador 2002 is an initiative to boost the prominence of Labrador on the world tourism stage. The celebration also recognizes the 250th anniversary of the presence of the Moravian Church on Labradors north coast. In addition to the corporate sponsorships and provincial funding, the program is also supported by the federal government through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Human Resources Development Canada.

"The tourism potential of Labrador is virtually untapped," said Minister Bettney. "This years celebration provides the launching point for the promotion of the history, culture and people of this great land. Already, weve witnessed the re-establishment of Destination Labrador which will promote the region by raising awareness of its unique products and experiences."

Access North - Labrador 2002 is comprised of several different components. A major initiative of the Moravians 250th anniversary is Labrador Through Moravian Eyes: Historic Photographs from the Moravian Archives, a traveling exhibit containing photographs, art and records of Northern Labrador from the past 250 years. Labrador Winter Trails focuses on the promotion of the newly-completed 1,500-kilometre system of groomed snowmobile trails. Access North also includes a marketing and communications program that will highlight the events for the year and position Labradors tourism industry for growth in the future. The Regional and Community Initiatives element encourages communities to develop unique ways to participate in the celebrations at the local level and to enhance existing events. Through this part of the celebrations, communities received grants to support their projects or events.

Also part of the Access North events is a symposium celebrating the Moravian 250th Anniversary - From Nisbet Harbour to Nain: The Early Moravian Exploration of Labrador - August 8-10 in Makkovik and Hopedale. This is a multi-disciplinary gathering in which historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, and theologians will shed new light on the beginnings of the Moravians who came and, unlike other Europeans, stayed on the north coast of Labrador.

"We are very pleased that we are teaming with the province to support Access North - a very important tourism initiative in Labrador," said Tom Randell, managing director of Innu Mikun Airlines and Labrador spokesperson for Provincial Airlines. "Quality, reliable air service is an essential element of the regional economic infrastructure of Labrador. Our goal is to provide services that serve the people of the region by promoting tourism and economic growth and providing career opportunities for the people we serve."

Labrador Through Moravian Eyes
250 Years of Art, Photographs and Records

An Exhibit Celebrating the Moravian 250th Anniversary

The year 2002 marks the 250th anniversary of the arrival of Moravian missionaries in Labrador. The Moravians were meticulous record keepers who wrote reports, drew maps and painted their Labrador surroundings. In the 1870s they added photography to their recording tools. Together their records give us their view of what life at the mission stations was like for Inuit and missionaries. From domestic activities to religious festivities, education, trade and travel we view Labrador Through Moravian Eyes.

Following the reunification of Germany, access to the vast historical records held by the Moravian Archives in what had been communist-governed East Germany became possible. Housed at the archives is a unique collection of approximately 1,000 glass-plate photo negatives which were taken by the Moravian Missionaries in Labrador from the 1870s to the 1930s. Also preserved are rare manuscript maps of northern Labrador and architects drawings, plans, and paintings of missionary settlements in Labrador. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador was instrumental in copying and preserving these rare images.

Approximately 250 of the photographs and art will be displayed through an exhibit telling the story of the Moravians and their presence among the Inuit and settlers in Labrador. An appropriate historical narrative will place these images into a Labrador historical context. Accompanying the Photographic Exhibit is a Photo Album containing a full set of all 1,000 photographs in the Moravian collection. Related products are also a coffee table book and a CD-ROM version of the exhibit.

The Early Moravian Exploration of Labrador

A Symposium Celebrating the Moravian 250th Anniversary

August 8-10, Makkovik and Hopedale.

In the summer of 1752, Johann Christian Erhardt arrived on the coast of Labrador with four missionaries to explore the possibilities of settling and doing mission work. In 1771 the Moravians returned and established a permanent settlement in Nain. They became an integral part of the lives and culture of the Inuit, who were the original settlers of the coast, and of the men and women from other cultures and countries who came in later years to live among them.

The symposium will convene experts on the earliest Moravian presence in Labrador. It will meet in Makkovik and Hopedale and is open to the public. Topics deal with the Inuit and European world of Labrador in the eighteenth century, a world into which the Moravians came. Papers will examine Labrador in the eighteenth century, the archaeology of the Makkovik area, the first Moravian exploration of 1752, and the preparations for the first permanent settlement of Moravians at Nain. This is a multi-disciplinary gathering in which historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, and theologians will shed new light on the beginnings of the Moravians who came and, unlike other Europeans, stayed on the north coast of Labrador.

The symposium will take place in two communities, Makkovik and Hopedale, and has connected with it other heritage events: a visit to the archaeological site at Ford's Bight and the opening of the photographic exhibit at Makkovik. In Hopedale there will also be tours of the mission complex and museum, the Parks Canada house, and the historic Moravian graveyard. The symposium will provide intellectual content and a focus to heritage and tourism initiatives launched in connection with the 250th anniversary of the first Moravian exploration of Labrador.

Special Events

Nisbet Harbour

Tour of the site where the first Moravian Mission House in Labrador, 1752, was rediscovered near Makkovik. Last summer an archaeological team unearthed the foundations of the mission house. Measurements, artifacts, and other historical evidence make it likely that this is the house described in the diaries of Johann Christian Erhardt and the missionaries. The ruins of this house were found in 1775 by the Moravian missionaries at Nain - Jens Haven, Johann Ludwig Beck and Christian Lister - and their two Inuit guides Tuglavina and Kannigak. The map drawn in 1775 by Jens Haven and found in the Unity Archives at Herrnhut, Germany, as well as local knowledge about the site led to its rediscovery in the year 2000.

Hopedale Tour

Tour of the Moravian mission complex at Hopedale, a National Historic Site since 1970. The large communal dwelling house was completed in 1853, and the church, finished in 1865, is still in use by the Hopedale Moravians, with services in English and Inuktitut. The oldest extant building of the complex is the missionary provisions house of 1817, maintained by Parks Canada and the Agvituk Historical Society. The Moravian store building today houses the museum of the Agvituk Historical Society.

The Oldest Graveyard of Hopedale Tour

Moravians honoured their dead by burying them in a graveyard called "God's Acre." The oldest Moravian graveyard near the mission house at Hopedale contains the graves of several first-generation missionaries, among them three who came with the original party that established Nain. Also Ferdinand Kruth, the master builder of the Hopedale and Hebron dwelling houses and churches, lies buried here, as well as the first settlers who became Moravians in Labrador.

Access North Logo

The Logo

The logos most prominent element is the Inukshuk which is integrated to landmark the Celebrations and direct visitors to Labrador as a tourism destination. The Inukshuk is framed by a window-like shape, similar to the windows of a church, to symbolize the Moravian influence within Labrador.

The splashes of colour in the background have several meanings:

  • The Northern lights - a significant part of Labradors appeal, the Northern Lights are associated with the winter months.
  • The background as a whole can also be interpreted as mountains, earth, water and snow.
  • The blue, green and white are the colours of the Labrador flag - which in itself symbolizes the essence of Labrador: the sky, the land and the snow. The red was chosen to not only accent these colours graphically, but to evoke the passion of the people in Labrador.
  • The white tracks symbolize the winter snowmobile trails, a significant part of the tourism industry in Labrador.

These colours spill outside the frame of the Moravian window to symbolize that the people of Labrador still have their own identity, culture and heritage.
