Government pays tribute to Margaret "Mag" Davis

Premier Roger Grimes and Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, paid tribute today to the late Margaret "Mag" Davis, one of Newfoundland and Labradors premiere female athletes.

"Ms. Davis was a great ambassador for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Premier Grimes. "On the national level, she represented this province over 30 times throughout her athletic career. This province has lost a great sportsperson and a valuable citizen."

Minister Bettney acknowledged the contribution Ms. Davis has made to the sporting community in this province as an athlete and a physical education teacher. Her accomplishments have been recognized through her inductions into the softball halls of fame of St. Johns, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Canada as well as the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.

"Ms. Davis set the standards for younger female athletes in this province and was a very important mentor," said Minister Bettney. "Not content to make a contribution in just one sport, she made her mark in a number of sports including softball, field hockey, soccer, ice hockey, curling, squash and golf."

Premier Grimes and Minister Bettney extended their sincere condolences to the members of the Davis family on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Funeral services for Ms. Davis are scheduled for 2 p.m. today in Fox Harbour.
