US couple to marry in Hearts Content

The Town of Hearts Content will be the site for a special occasion on Valentines Day. A couple from the United States will exchange wedding vows on the site of the Hearts Content Cable Station, a Provincial Historic Site.

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said: "I am delighted that Karen Parr and Craig Davis, both of Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA, have decided to get married in Hearts Content on Valentines Day. The wedding reinforces Newfoundland and Labradors recent designation as one of the 10 most romantic vacation destinations in the world by Signature Vacations. I wish them many years of happiness."

Parr and Davis will arrive at St. Johns International Airport on Tuesday, February 12.

Hearts Content was the site of the first successful transatlantic cable landing in 1866 which revolutionized communications between Europe and North America. The 1899 cable landing has been designated an event of national historic significance by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.

The Heart's Content Cable Station was designated a Provincial Historic Site in 1974. It was built in 1874 and added to in 1918. It is open to the public from mid-June until the Thanksgiving weekend. In 2001, it was selected as one of the featured sites for the Receiving the World celebrations when a new exhibit, entitled Words Across the Atlantic was opened.
