Minister announces Attractions Canada Awards Program for 2002

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is pleased that government will participate in the Attractions Canada Awards Program again in 2002. This national endeavour, in its fourth year, is spearheaded by Montreal-based Attractions Canada in partnership with the Canadian Tourism Commission, the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, Canadian Heritage and others. It highlights and promotes activities, events and attractions to encourage Canadians to be tourists in their own country.

"Last year was our most successful year yet with this program," said Minister Aylward. "Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve won this province's first national award in the Natural Outdoor Site - less 100 sq. km. category. The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation greatly values this program as it provides an excellent opportunity for us to showcase this province's most outstanding, unique and world-class attractions. We fully expect this year will be just as successful if not more so."

The Attractions Canada Awards Program has six categories for which the public and tourism industry can nominate provincial attractions and events, including outdoor sites, indoor sites, cultural events, sports events, new attractions, national or international attractions. The winners of the six provincial awards will subsequently be submitted to a national competition, and national winners will be used in the Attractions Canada awareness campaigns for the ensuing year.

Provincial winners for 2001 were Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve for best Natural Outdoor Site, provincially and nationally, as well as for the Attractions of National or International Interest; Colony of Avalon for best Developed Outdoor Site; the Newfoundland Insectarium in Deer Lake for best Indoor Site; the Brigus Blueberry Festival and Vikings! 1000 Years for the best Cultural Events; Trifest - Corner Brook Triathlon for best Sporting Event; and Norstead: A Real Life Saga for best New Attraction.
