Cabinet committee visits Labrador Region of the Strategic Social Plan

The Social Policy Committee of Cabinet will meet the Labrador Region Steering Committee for the Strategic Social Plan (SSP) in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Wednesday, January 30.

This is the second in a series of working visits to the six SSP regions across the province. The meetings give Cabinet ministers a chance to speak with regional steering committees about the work they do to implement the Strategic Social Plan.

"As social policy ministers, we hear a lot about the Strategic Social Plan and the exciting work happening in SSP regions, and these working visits give us a chance to see how committees are implementing the plan," said Minister Judy Foote, chair of the Social Policy Committee. "We also get the chance, as ministers, to reinforce our commitment to the SSP."

Site visits are an important part of the working meetings, and highlight programs that reflect the goals and values of the Strategic Social Plan. In Labrador, ministers will visit the Aboriginal Head Start Program and Labrador Friendship Centre. They will also meet community leaders from the area.

"This is a good opportunity for us to talk about social development in Labrador," said Ernest McLean, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs. "We know there are innovative programs making a difference in the region, but there are significant issues that must be addressed, and addressed in a collaborative way in keeping with the spirit of the SSP."

The Strategic Social Plan was launched in 1998 as a way to improve long term opportunities for people and better coordinate delivery of local services. Committees work to implement the SSP through planning and consulting with partner agencies and the community, and fostering partnerships.

"This is the first time the social policy committee has traveled across the province for working visits," said Gerald Smith, lead minister for the Strategic Social Plan, and Minister of Human Resources and Employment, "I'm pleased that our meetings will not only highlight the work of regional steering committees of the SSP, they'll show us creative ways to address social issues."
