Premier offers condolences to family and friends of Walter Carter

Premier Roger Grimes today offered condolences to the family and friends of former provincial Member of the House of Assembly and Member of Parliament Walter Carter.

"It is with great regret that we offer our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Walter Carter," said Premier Grimes. "We particularly think of his wife, children, grandchildren and sisters and brother. We hope they take comfort in the fact that there are a great many people saddened by his passing."

Mr. Carter served in both Liberal and Progressive Conservative provincial cabinets and as a Progressive Conservative member in Ottawa after starting his political life as a member of St. Johns city council in the 1960s. After serving provincially and federally, Mr. Carter retired from politics in 1996 as the Liberal MHA for Twillingate.

"Walter Carter will be missed by his family and friends. All of my colleagues in government, I am certain, are very disheartened that we have lost an individual who dedicated his life to public service on behalf of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."
