Environment Minister Kevin Aylward has
announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment
of the Environmental Protection Act.
UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:
(1) Expansion of Distribution Line -
Hampden
Proponent: Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro
(2) Crown Forest Management District 2
(Come By Chance) Amendment
Proponent: Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods
The above project has been released from
further environmental assessment subject to compliance with any other Acts
and Regulations and to the following conditions:
The proposed amendment area may contain Erioderma
pedicellatum, a rare lichen which is presently listed as a special
concern by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC),
and listed as vulnerable under the province�s Endangered Species Act.
Therefore:
- The area must be surveyed for Erioderma
lichen prior to any harvesting activity taking place; and,
- Should the findings of the survey indicate
the presence of Erioderma lichen, then:
- the locations must be provided to the
Inland Fish and Wildlife Division, Department of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation;
- a 20 metre no-cut buffer must be
established around sites; and,
- domestic loggers must be adequately
informed of the presence of this rare lichen and mitigative measures
for their protection.
