Minister encouraged by Labour Board ruling

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is encouraged with the recent announcement made by the Canadian Industrial Relations Board that an agreement between Marine Atlantic and its unions will ensure there will be no interruption in ferry service for the length of the present agreement.

"It encourages both sides to accept binding arbitration as a mechanism to settle labour disputes," said Minister Aylward. "Presumably, this will lead to no disruption in the ferry service until the end of the agreement."

This is positive news. This provides a sense of security for the travelling public. The Marine Atlantic ferry service is an important partner in our tourism industry bringing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. I intend, with my colleague the Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, Percy Barrett, to pursue the federal government to obtain guaranteed uninterrupted ferry service. Now that labour and management of Marine Atlantic agree that binding arbitration is a solution, it should be the permanent solution."
