Minister comments on Quidi Vidi development

The following statement concerning the development at Quidi Vidi was issued today by Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation:

"After a thorough review of this issue, I have concluded that the future of this development falls entirely under the jurisdiction of the City of St. John's.

"Prudent consideration was given to the decision of Justice Green of September 7, 2001, and meetings were held with the developers and the Quidi Vidi Foundation. Additionally, a second archaeology review was completed on the site which complements the review carried out in 1999. As a result of the second study, this project is released from future archaeological investigation.

" This decision was not made lightly and was done so after looking at all the information presented to me. The permits and regulations which the developer is working under are the responsibility of the city.

"Quidi Vidi Battery Provincial Historic Site protects the history of the area and presents the story of the English and French conflict over control of the fishery in the 1700s. This historic site is the province's commitment to ensure the preservation of this story for future generations."
