Minister responds to comments on park closings

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation said that comments from the Opposition that the timing of the closure of provincial parks hurts tourism are not correct.

"Numbers of visitors drastically drop after the labour day weekend. In the early 1990's, parks were open until early October; however, statistics indicated that the use was minimal. Therefore, it was decided to offer the services of provincial parks until mid September, a period of time which was believed to accommodate the fewer number of travelers. Private, national and municipal parks close at various times, some prior to September 17 and others remain open until September 30 or slightly later. There are some park services until December 31 at the national parks of which tourists can avail."

The minister continued, "I believe that the number of parks (national, municipal and private) remaining open are sufficient to accommodate the limited number of traveling public at this time of year. As the numbers continue to grow in the tourism industry, the dates on which the parks close can be reviewed."

Winter camping is provided at two provincial parks: Butter Pot and Notre Dame. Campers will be provided with access to pit privies, but they must provide their own water and remove any garbage from the park. As the gates to these parks will be closed and locked, equipment on campsites and in storage is to be accessed by hiking, skiing or snowshoeing. Motorized off-road vehicles, including snowmobiles and all terrain vehicles, are not permitted in provincial parks. Park roads will not be cleared of snow; however, a cleared area will be provided to permit vehicle parking off the highway.

Individuals still have the opportunity to experience the parks through hiking and experiencing the natural environment.
