Minister announces curators for aboriginal exhibits at The Rooms

Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Kevin Aylward today announced the appointment of three curators for aboriginal exhibits within the provincial museum which will be displayed at The Rooms.

"The provincial museum is currently planning for the development of permanent exhibits to be presented at The Rooms," said Minister Aylward. "The provincial museums space for permanent exhibits will be nearly tripled at The Rooms, and this space will be used to more fully represent the diversity of the provinces natural environment and the many cultures that have made this place home over the past 9,000 years."

In addition to presenting the natural history, pre-historic cultures and European settlement of Newfoundland and Labrador, the permanent exhibits will present the history and culture of the contemporary aboriginal cultures in the province. Government has invited the Labrador Inuit Association, Innu Nation and Miawpukek First Nations to partner with the provincial museum in presenting their stories.

"I am pleased to announce that Carol Brice-Bennett, Peter Armitage and Philip Jeddore will join our team of curators at the provincial museum and help develop exhibits which relate to our aboriginal histories," said Minister Aylward.

Ms. Brice-Bennett has been appointed as the curator of the Inuit exhibit. She has a masters degree in anthropology from Memorial University and served as the executive director of the Labrador Institute of Northern Studies from 1986 to1996. For the past five years, she has researched and written extensively on a number of topics relating to the history of the Inuit of Northern Labrador, as well as on the historic fishing operation at Battle Harbour.

Mr. Armitage will be the curator of the Innu exhibit. He also has a masters degree in anthropology from Memorial University and is presently completing doctoral studies at the Universit Laval. Since 1982, he has researched, published and taught extensively with regard to the Innu of Labrador and Quebec. He has also served with the Innu Nation in a variety of capacities including negotiation of heritage resources and land use issues.

Mr. Jeddore will assume the position of curator of the Mikmaq exhibit. Mr. Jeddore was born and raised in Burnt Woods, near Conne River. He has a breadth of experience, including work as a teacher and as a land claims researcher. He has both worked and volunteered with a number of Innu and Mikmaq organizations and has served as a board member of the Native Council of Canada.
