Minister congratulates Team Newfoundland and Labrador

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today congratulated Team Newfoundland and Labrador on their return home from the 2001 Canada Summer Games with a record seven medals.

"I am extremely proud of our athletes and their accomplishments at the Summer Games," said Minister Aylward. "Their performance was absolutely outstanding, as they brought home a record number of medals and moved up in the standings in several sports. Every athlete is to be commended for their tremendous commitment and hard work during the past two weeks. We all share in this great victory for the province."

Newfoundland and Labrador captured one gold medal, four silver medals and two bronze medals at the Games which concluded this past Saturday. Diver Adam Morgan won the province's first gold medal during the three-metre springboard competition, as well as two silver medals in the one-metre board and platform competitions. He was bestowed the honour of carrying the province's flag during the closing ceremonies. Trevor O'Brien won a silver in the 10,000 metre race, the men's soccer team won silver, Justin and Jonathan Ladha won bronze in the men's laser II event, and the men's rugby team won the bronze.

"Our province's success during the past two weeks can be greatly attributed to the work of the terrific coaches and managers who spent countless hours of training with our athletes in preparation for the Games," added Mr. Aylward. "I offer my sincerest appreciation for your continued dedication and commitment to these athletes, as you are indeed the backbone of sport in the province.

"I would also like to recognize and applaud the efforts of Team Newfoundland and Labrador's mission staff who worked tirelessly over the past few months as well as during the Games. The mission staff, lead by chef Jimmy Tee and assistant chef Glen Littlejohn, deserve great praise for another well-organized and memorable Canada Games.

"I must also acknowledge one other person, Vic Janes, who has made a significant contribution to the development of sport and recreation in the province. He has had the privilege of providing leadership for several Canada Games and played an integral role during these past Summer Games."
