NOTE TO EDITORS: Opening celebration of Cape Ray Lighthouse as a Receiving the World Communications site, July 20.

Kelvin Parsons, Minister of Justice, on behalf of Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, invites the media to the opening reception celebrating the Cape Ray Lighthouse as a Receiving the World Communications site. The reception begins at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 20, at the Cape Ray Lighthouse.

In 1856,the first submarine telegraph cable from mainland North America touched land at Cape Ray. A decade later, with the landing of the transatlantic cable at Heart�s Content, Cape Ray became a link in the chain between North America and Europe.
