"For almost 50 years, the Arts and Letters Competition, funded by the provincial government, has served to stimulate both amateur and professional creative activity through the annual competition," said Minister Aylward. "This year, the Arts and Letters Competition will receive additional funding in the amount of $40,000 in recognition of the programs 50th anniversary in 2002." The Arts and Letters Competition includes nine areas of competition; poetry and short fiction, non-fictional prose, drama script, musical competition, painting, drawing and print making, photography (colour and black and white) and three dimensional art. Each year, the department receives hundreds of entries from participants of all ages. This is certainly an indication of the popularity of the competition. "I am delighted that government is able to assist in the anniversary celebrations of such a valuable program, which I am sure will continue to successfully cultivate and represent the interests and talents of Newfoundland and Labrador artists," added Minister Aylward.
