Minister responds to announcement by Corner Brook Pulp and Paper

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, whose department is responsible for natural areas, has responded to the announcement by Corner Brook Pulp and Paper to cease clear cutting in the Main River watershed.

"This is a very responsible and positive move by the company to play a significant role in the conservation of that natural area of our province," said Minister Aylward. "In order to maintain and protect the pristine nature of our environment it takes a team approach. Companies like Corner Brook Pulp and Paper and its employees are part of that team. I am so very pleased to see them taking this environmentally sound approach which I commend." 

"Yesterday's announcement demonstrates that we can move forward on economic development that provides jobs for our citizens, contributes to the economy of the province while conserving and protecting the land and water for future generations."

Government continues to work to obtain Canadian Heritage River Status for Main River. The provincial government has made its proposal to the Canadian Heritage River Systems Board for heritage status for Main River. The proposal contributes to a balanced solution between continued forest harvesting, protection of the pine marten, and the old growth forest for its watershed. Minister Aylward said his department is working closely with federal officials to finalize the proposal to the federal Canadian Heritage Minister Sheila Copps.
