Minister announces funding for adventure tourism event

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation (Acting) today announced funding for Raid the North Extreme 2001. Minister Kelly announced a grant on behalf of government for $20,000 for Wreckhouse Entertainment, which will host the event in June of this year.

"The provincial government is wholeheartedly committed to the tourism industry, which has been growing and thriving over the past few years," said Minister Kelly. "Our province has a very diverse tourism base, and we have been successfully promoting Newfoundland and Labrador as a province with a rich cultural heritage. We are also making great strides in developing our strengths in the eco-tourism sector through events such as Raid the North Extreme, which will see competitors from around the world take part in a wilderness adventure race."

Raid the North Extreme is the property of Toronto-based Frontier Adventure Racing Inc., which has established itself as one of the best adventure race circuits in the world. The Raid the North circuit involves six annual races in Canada, and Raid the North Extreme, a five day race which features an international field of competitors, is designed to give a true expedition-style experience, incorporating sea kayaking, mountain biking, hiking and other wilderness adventure experiences. This year's race is taking place on the West Coast of the province and is a partnership between Frontier Adventure Racing Inc. and a local non-profit volunteer group, Wreckhouse Entertainment, which offers experience in organizing and hosting national and international sporting events in the province.

"Adventure racing is growing in popularity around the world, and I have every confidence that Wreckhouse Entertainment will do a remarkable job to ensure that Raid the North Extreme 2001 proves to be another exciting and successful tourism and sporting event for the province, and helps to establish Newfoundland and Labrador as an international adventure racing venue," added Minister Kelly.
