Funding announced for silviculture work

Terra Nova MHA Tom Lush and the MHA for Trinity North, Ross Wiseman, today announced funding in the amount of $157,515 for a silviculture project taking place in these districts along with the district of Bonavista South. The announcement was made in conjunction with Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford. 

Mr. Lush said the enhancement of forest resources is critical for the long term survival of businesses and workers in the Terra Nova district who depend on the forest industry. "I am pleased that government is committed to the long term development of our forest resources through the provincial silviculture program," said Mr. Lush. "This program will ensure that our forest resources remain healthy with the immediate benefit of creating additional employment opportunities for the people of Terra Nova district."

Mr. Wiseman said, "Silviculture activity also acts as an important economic generator for many rural communities throughout the province. The meaningful employment created through these projects provide a significant boost to local economies." 

According to Mr. Woodford, responsible management of our forest resource through meaningful silviculture activity will ensure the forests of our province remain productive into the future. "Investing in the future of our provincial forest resource through the provincial silviculture program is an integral component of the responsible approach toward sustainable forest management utilized by the Newfoundland Forest Service." 

Central Forest Developers Limited of Campbellton has been awarded the contract for the project, which will involve site preparation activity for future reforestation work. Activity will commence in August and continue for 16 weeks, creating employment for three people.
