Local businesses to attend international aerospace exhibitions in Halifax and Seattle

A delegation of Newfoundland and Labrador aerospace and defence companies will head to the Nova Scotia International Air Show and Aerospace Exhibition being held at Shearwater Airport from September 7-9. A delegation will also be in Seattle, Washington for the Aerospace Congress and Exhibition from September 10-14.

Industry, Trade and Rural Development Minister Beaton Tulk will lead the delegation to the Nova Scotia Air Show and Exhibition, accompanied by MHA George Sweeney, Parliamentary Secretary to Minister Tulk for Information and Advanced Technologies.

The delegation consists of: Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technical Industries (Nati), NewTech Instruments Limited, Northstar Network Ltd., and Steelcor Manufacturing Corporation. Cougar Helicopters Inc., Provincial Airlines Limited and xwave will also be in attendance.

The Nova Scotia International Air Show and Aerospace Exhibition is gaining a strong reputation as one of Canada's premier aerospace and defence industry events. It will feature approximately 50 exhibitors, including Newfoundland and Labrador's pavilion.

"This exhibition is an excellent opportunity for Newfoundland and Labrador companies to promote their capabilities in this field," said Minister Tulk. "In addition, it will enable us to make contacts and build on established relationships with major players in the aerospace industry."

Some of the companies will continue on to Seattle for the Aerospace Congress and Exhibition following the exhibition in Shearwater. Those companies include: Nati, Northstar Network Ltd., and the Stephenville Airport Corporation.

The Aerospace Congress and Exhibition in Seattle is a partnership between the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aerospace and Aerospace North America. SAE is the world's leader in the development and publication of aerospace technical standards. Aerospace North America is a not-for-profit organization focused on the development of the North American aerospace industry through marketing and business events such as the Seattle exhibition. It formed a partnership with SAE Aerospace in 1999 to stage the annual Aerospace Congress and Exhibition in Seattle.

The Seattle event includes an international trade show and six different leading aerospace conference events in commercial, general and military aviation. The exhibition will include a Canadian Pavilion, which will feature a group of Newfoundland and Labrador aerospace and defence industry firms.

"The congress and exhibition in Seattle is a great opportunity for us," said Minister Tulk. "The participating companies can use this event, not only as a means to market themselves, but also to learn more about different aspects of the industry."

There are currently about 30 companies involved in Newfoundland and Labrador's aerospace and defence industry.

"There is strong growth potential for the defence and aerospace industry in this province," said Minister Tulk. "In the recently released Renewal Strategy for Jobs and Growth, government committed to developing this sector more fully. We plan to accomplish this by promoting opportunities and partnerships with the private sector to increase national and international business for provincial firms in this sector. Significant spin-off opportunities for manufacturing and service based companies will also emerge as the aerospace and defence industry grows in the province."
