New facility for kelp harvesting and processing

Southern Newfoundland Seaweed will improve the quality of its seaweed product by constructing a new facility that will enable the expansion of a kelp harvesting and processing operation. Bill Matthews, Member of Parliament for Burin-St. Georges, on behalf of Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada, along with Beaton Tulk, Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, today announced total funding of $100,000. Human Resources Development Canada is investing $50,000 in this project through the Canada Jobs Fund. The Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development will provide funding of $50,000.

The harvesting and production of seaweed (kelp) is a new growth industry and Southern Newfoundland Seaweed has a long-term secondary processing plan to market its product in whole leaf, powdered and ground form. The proponent has considerable experience in the industry.

In addition to providing a valuable new development for the community, this project will provide jobs to area residents," said Mr. Matthews. "The Government of Canada is pleased to support such a worthwhile project that will help strengthen and diversify the local economy."

This is a very welcome initiative that will generate employment and provide support to a new and innovative industry," said Minister Tulk. "Diversification of our economy is important to the revitalization of rural Newfoundland and Labrador."

Funding for this project was provided through the Canada Jobs Fund. This fund was a national program designed to assist areas of high unemployment. Todays announcement is an example of one such project.

The Canada Jobs Fund was brought to an end on June 22, 2000. Human Resources Development Canada officials will continue to assess and, where appropriate, recommend for approval by the minister, eligible projects submitted to the department before June 22, 2000. Uncommitted funding will be redirected to regional economic development agencies.

This project has been reviewed to ensure compliance with the departments improved administration of its grant and contribution programs.
