Employment numbers continue upward trend

For September, employment in the province continued its move upwards. According to the latest Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada, based on year-over-year data, employment increased by 2.7 per cent, or approximately 5,700 jobs as compared to September of last year. The unemployment rate was 13.5 per cent, a decrease of 1.1 percentage points from last year.

"We are pleased to report that employment continued to grow in September," said Gerald Smith, Minister of Human Resources and Employment. "Average monthly employment for the first three quarters of 2001 has grown by 3.3 per cent. Based on year-to-date performance, we expect 2001 to be a record setting year for employment growth. Employment should average about 211,000 this year, well above the previous record of 207,400 set in 1990."

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the province reported a slight decrease of 0.6 per cent in employment in September compared to August 2001, while the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped 0.5 percentage points to 15.4 per cent. Seasonally adjusted data looks at patterns of employment change within the current year from one month to the next, whereas the actual data compares employment this year to employment last year. On a year-over-year basis, the provincial employment trend in 2001 has been strongly positive as reflected by the actual data.

For September, employment growth in the province was concentrated in the service sector including wholesale and retail trade, health care, transportation and warehousing and management and related services.
