Appointments announced to Social Services Appeal Board

Gerald Smith, Minister of Human Resources and Employment, announced today membership appointments to the Social Services Appeal Board.

The appeal board is an important resource for income support clients who may object to a departmental decision regarding their entitlement to financial assistance in accordance with the Social Assistance Act.

Marilyn Duffett (St. John's) has been reappointed board chair, while Elizabeth Joy (Corner Brook) has been reappointed vice-chair of the appeal board. Gloria Pearson (Mount Pearl) has returned as an alternate member. Two new appointments to the board are Walter Vincent of Corner Brook and Maxwell Snow of Stephenville. Mr. Snow has been appointed as a regular member while Mr Vincent will serve as an alternate member.

"I am very happy to welcome the new members and returning members to the Social Services Appeal Board," said Minister Smith. "The board represents a great combination of knowledge and sensitivity which will be an asset to our clients."

The Social Services Appeal Board, which is appointed in accordance with the Social Services Appeal Board Act, operates independently from the Department of Human Resources and Employment. The board is responsible for hearing appeals from clients and potential clients respecting decisions of officials and administrators of the Income Support Program.

During fiscal year 2000-2001, the appeal board deliberated on 300 appeal requests. The average time frame for an appeal to be heard is between 14-16 days. Clients are advised of their right to appeal when a decision is rendered by a departmental official.

"It's very important that our clients have the ability to exercise their right of appeal with respect to decisions that affect them." said Minister Smith. "The Social Services Appeal Board is a valuable resource for clients when they are not satisfied with a decision made by the department. These latest appointments ensure that clients will have their appeal heard in a fair and equitable manner."
