Two more rabies cases in Labrador
Dr. Hugh Whitney, provincial veterinarian with the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, today confirmed two more cases of rabies in Labrador.
Dr. Whitney said the rabies cases involve two foxes in Wabush. One fox was killed by a resident on August 21 after the animal was acting aggressively and wandered into a garage. The second fox was found dead on August 26 near a resident's backyard, which is near an area where a cat was recently attacked by a fox.
"These foxes were picked up by our conservation officers and subsequently tested for rabies," said Dr. Whitney. "No recent reports of rabies have been received from other communities in Labrador, however, residents should remain watchful and contact local conservation officers if there are any concerns."
These latest rabies cases bring to 11 the total number of confirmed cases in Labrador since November 2000.
