Minister meets with military regarding security issues

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Tom Lush recently completed a round of briefings with the commanding officers of military establishments in the province to discuss security issues following the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. Minister Lush met with Commander Keith Mullaly, Commander Officer of CFS St. Johns; Colonel Paul McCabe, Commanding Officer of 5 Wing Goose Bay, and Colonel Peter McKeage, Commanding Officer of 9 Wing Gander.

During his visit to 9 Wing Gander, Minister Lush had the opportunity to inspect the bases Hazardous Material Emergency Response Team, which is capable of addressing biological and chemical incidents in the region. "After inspecting the team, I was impressed with the capability of this unit and its ability to respond to biological threats in the province," said Minister Lush. "I have been informed that this unit is one of the best in Canada and I am pleased that it is based in our province."

Minister Lush also discussed governments commitment to enhancing security measures and addressing security concerns, both within the provincial government and throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. A Ministerial Committee on Security Matters was established this fall in the aftermath of the events of September 11. Minister Lush is a member of this ministerial committee.

"Military operations in the province will play a key role in security matters and we will work with the commanding officers to keep each other informed about potential concerns or risks to the province," said Minister Lush. "It is important, however, that people are aware that despite these increased acts of security, the level of threats to the province is considered to be very low."

Minister Lush also discussed the provinces efforts to obtain an expanded military presence in Newfoundland and Labrador, especially in light of the provinces strategic position in North America. "We will continue to advocate to the Department of National Defence that the federal government needs to re-invest much needed resources into the military installations located in Newfoundland and Labrador."
