Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment Minister Ralph Wiseman has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Labrador City Carol Mining Project - Luce Pit Development

Proponent: Iron Ore Company of Canada

The proponent plans to develop the Luce Deposit as part of the progression of the Carol Mining Project. The Luce Deposit is located three to five kilometres southeast of historical mining activities and comprises 1.2 billion tonnes of reserves and resources in three zones: Luce South, Luce Main and Luce Basin. The life of the Luce Deposit is anticipated at 25 years. Access to the deposit is through existing roadways on the property. A short (approximately 1 km) branch line for the Automatic Train Operation and an additional loading pocket are being considered.. White Brook will be diverted and Hakim Lake and several smaller streams will be drained. The proponent is planning to commence development of the Luce Pit in 2001. The undertaking was registered on February 19, 2001; public comments are due on March 28, 2001; and the minister's decision is due on April 5, 2001.

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Crown Five Year Forest Management Plan District 5 (Bonavista North)

Proponent: Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods

The minister has released the project in accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Assessment Act subject to compliance with the following:

"The monitoring committee established from stakeholders of the Ecosystem Management Planning Team for Districts 4, 5 and 6 must provide the Minister of Environment with a monitoring report of past annual activities for each year outlined in the Five Year Operating Plan, together with any recommended changes required in the Plan."
