NLIS 2 December 13, 2001 (Environment) Environmental Assessment Bulletin Environment Minister Ralph Wiseman has announced the following event relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. Copies of documents may be obtained by contacting the Department of Environment at (709) 729-2562 or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.
The proponent proposes the use of updated practice laser guided munitions at the 5 Wing Practice Target Area (PTA) near Minipi Lake. An additional safety template (approximately 2,000 square kilometres) is proposed beyond the existing PTA to provide for public safety in the case of a malfunction. Control of the site will be transferred to the federal government from the province. The newer version of practice laser guided-bombs are more accurate, heavier and have larger wing surfaces. Because they are also launched from a higher altitude, they have the capability to glide considerably farther than the current designs. The undertaking was registered on December 11, public comments are due January 16 and the minister's decision is due on January 25.
