Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment Minister Ralph Wiseman has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. Copies of documents may be obtained by contacting the Department of Environment at 729-2562 or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.

NEW UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

          St. Lawrence Wind Demonstration Project
          Proponent: The NeWind Group

The proponent proposes to construct and operate a five to 25 MW wind generation demonstration project consisting of up to 50 wind turbines with individual rated capacity between 500 kW and 1.8 MW. The wind farm is proposed for an area approximately one kilometre northwest of the Town of St. Lawrence on both sides of Route 220. The turbines are horizontal axis, three bladed wind energy converters with a maximum height of 75 metres and a rotor diameter of between 40 and 54 metres. Turbines will be accessed via a 4.5 metre wide gravel access road. Underground cabling will link the turbines to an intertie point and then be connected through overhead transmission lines to a substation. An in-service date is projected for late 2003. The undertaking was registered on November 21, public comments are due December 28 and the minister's decision date is January 5.

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

          Eastern Lawn Bed and Breakfast Access Road
          Proponent: Jenny Tarrant

The minister has released the undertaking from environmental assessment in accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Assessment Act. The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation has required the proponent to complete a Stage 1 Historic Resources Impact Assessment.
