Helping the environment earns computers for schools
For their efforts in the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board's (MMSB) annual school recycling contest, environmentally conscious students at 12 schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador will receive a new computer for their schools. The computers, valued at $1,500 each, are awarded to 10 schools for recycling the largest number of beverage containers per student in their school district, while the other two computers are awarded through a random draw from among the 275 schools participating in the contest.
"This is definitely a community effort for the environment and the school, " said MMSB chairman Gordon Seabright. "Every person in every community and school participating in the school recycling contest can be proud of the results."
As part of the contest, participating schools submit their recycling volumes to MMSB each month between October and April. Recycling co-ordinators at each school arrange for the delivery of containers to the local Green Depot, collect the beverage container refund, and use the proceeds to fund school projects. To date, more than 4.2 million containers have been recycled in this year's contest, up by 1.7 million containers from last year. Since MMSB started the school recycling contest in January 1999, a total of 28 computers have been awarded to schools.
The school recycling contest is a part of the province's beverage container recycling program which is administered by the MMSB, a Crown agency established by the Department of Environment to develop, implement and, where appropriate, manage a variety of waste diversion programs in Newfoundland and Labrador. The MMSB is currently responsible for the beverage container recycling program, a pilot household hazardous waste collection program, and the administration of the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund.
