Minister applauds provinces teachers

Education Minister Judy Foote invites everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador to join her today in saluting the more than 6,000 teachers in the province. UNESCO has designated October 5 as World Teachers Day.

"We have an education system that is second to none - one that is a real source of pride to me as minister," said Minister Foote. "This is due in no small part to the excellent teachers we have in this province. I take great pleasure today in thanking all our teachers for their dedication and hard work. The success of our students in national and international competitions reflects the quality instruction they receive."

Seven years ago, UNESCO established World Teachers Day to recognize the important role teachers play worldwide. It also emphasizes the need for competent, qualified teachers to educate the worlds youth.

"We are fortunate in Newfoundland and Labrador to have one of the most highly qualified teaching forces in the country. Most teachers have two undergraduate degrees and almost one-quarter have a Masters degree," said the minister. "These men and women are well-equipped to prepare our children for future success."

The Canadian Teachers Federation has chosen as this years theme, "Teachers building the future," emphasizing the role of teacher as builder, providing the tools students require for success.
