Minister expresses appreciation to school board trustees

Education Minister Judy Foote offered her congratulations today to school board trustees, those elected and those acclaimed.

"I extend my sincere appreciation to those individuals who offered themselves for the position of trustee," said Minister Foote. "They volunteer their time because they feel they can make a difference in the lives of our young people and to education delivery in our province.

"School board trustees play a vital role in our education system. In partnership with the Department of Education and other education stakeholders, board trustees determine the direction of our education system."

There are a total of 150 trustee positions in 10 district boards. Of these, 69 were acclaimed and 59 were contested. The remaining vacant 22 positions, for which there were no nominees, will be filled through appointment. In this situation, the Schools Act, 1997 allows for the Lieutenant-Governor in Council to appoint individuals to the position of trustee.
