Renovations and extension to Rocky Harbour school

Education Minister Judy Foote and school District 3 Chairman Joshua Carey, Jr. announced funding today to replace Holland's Memorial Central High School, Norris Point. This funding will be used to convert the Rocky Harbour Elementary building to a K-12 facility.

Construction will include an extension to the existing Rocky Harbour Elementary building and extensive upgrading to convert the building to a K-12 school. The school will have a mechanical ventilation system, new science lab and a library resource centre which will also serve as the community library. The school will be wheelchair accessible and have a specialist area for students with disabilities. In addition, the entire building will be fitted with a local area computer network and each classroom will wired for computers and the Internet.

"The upgrading of Rocky Harbour school will provide the very latest in facilities and resources for students and will result in a state-of-the-art school in the Bonne Bay North area," said Minister Foote.

"We are pleased with plans to build an extension and do extensive upgrading to Rocky Harbour Elementary. I know that students in the communities that will be served by the K-12 facility will benefit greatly from the enhancement of their learning environment and the new amenities," said Mr. Carey.

Since reorganization, government has committed $160 million for school construction and renovation projects including $23 million announced for 2001-2002 in the recent budget. To date eight new state-of-the-art schools have been constructed, planning/construction is under way for 10 more and major renovations or extensions have been completed on 27 schools throughout the province.
