The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial Judo championships

MUN Judo Club will be hosting this years fall provincial Judo championships for competitors from all across the province. Clubs from the west coast, including Stephenville, Stephenville Crossing and Corner Brook, as well as clubs from Happy Valley-Goose Bay and several from the St. John's / Mount Pearl area will be represented by competitors ranging in ages from four to 40+. Over 70 competitors will be fighting to earn the title of provincial champion for their respective weight categories.

Opening ceremonies will commence at 9:20 a.m. Saturday, with the first match of the day to commence at 9:30 a.m. The competition will run throughout the day with competitors competing in categories grouped by weight and belt ranking. Closing ceremonies and medal presentations will follow the final matches at around 3:45 p.m.

This competition follows a regional tournament held in St. John's just a few weeks ago, and the prestigious Commonwealth Judo Championships, hosted by Stephenville this past summer, which attracted competitors from around the world.

Provincial competitions such as the fall championships are the gateway to both the Atlantic and National Championships. It serves as a testing ground for competitors who aspire to compete for the province in tournaments such as these. For younger athletes it is a stepping-stone to competing for Newfoundland and Labrador in the Canada Games, which take place every four years. However, above all, these competitions are fun for everyone involved.

Everyone is welcome to come and discover the Olympic sport of Judo. Admission to this weekend's event is free.
