The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school cross country championships

Fatima Academy in St. Brides is the host school of this Saturday�s high school cross country running championships. Teams and individual runners from around the province have qualified to compete at this event which ends the cross country calendar for the fall.

The senior boys will run a 5,000 metre course at 2:45 p.m. Competing for the team championship will be O�Donel High (Mount Pearl) Marystown Central High, Fitzgerald Academy (English Harbour West), Stephenville High, Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), Menihek High (Labrador City), Baie Verte High, Baltimore High (Ferryland) and the host school. The top three finishers from the inter-regional qualifying runs, not on winning teams, have also qualified for the provincial competition. Runners from the following schools have qualified for the individual competition only: Gander Collegiate, Prince of Wales Collegiate, (St. John�s) St. Augustines (Plum Point), E. J. Pratt (Brownsdale), Jens Haven Memorial (Nain), Dorset Collegiate (Pilley�s Island), St. Peter�s Academy (Westport) and MSB Regional High (Middle Arm).

The senior girls course is a 3,000 metre race and will take place at 2:00 p.m. Competing teams include O�Donel High, St. Lawrence Central High, Smallwood Academy (Gambo), Stephenville High, Roncalli High (Port Saunders), Menihek High (Labrador City), Baltimore High (Ferryland) and Fatima. The individual competition will be represented by Marystown Central High, St. Joseph�s (Lamaline), Regina High (Corner Brook), Holy Spirit High (Manuels), Indian River High (Springdale) and St. Peters Academy.

The junior boys will race the same 3,000 metres as the senior girls at 1:15 p.m. Teams that have qualified for this race include Beaconsfield Junior High (St. John�s), Marystown Central High, St. Paul�s Junior High (Gander), Stephenville High, Roncalli High, Baie Verte High, Baltimore High and Fatima Academy. Competing as individual runners will be athletes from Fitzgerald Academy, St. Lawrence Central High, Victoria All Grade (Gaultois), St. James Junior High (Port aux Basques), Assumption High (Stephenville Crossing) and St. Josephs High (St. Georges).

The 2,000 metre Junior Girls event will start at 12:45 p.m. Teams from St. Kevin�s (Goulds), Marystown Central High, Holy Cross (St. Albans), Stephenville High, Roncalli High, St. Peters Academy (Westport), Baltimore High and the host Fatima Academy will participate. The junior girls competing for the individual race will also come from Victoria All Grade, St. Augustines, St. Paul�s Junior High, Roncalli (Avondale), Mount Pearl Intermediate and L.P. Purchase (Botwood)

The BBQ and presentation of awards will be held at 5:00 p.m. Saturday. Keyin College and School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers Association are the sponsors for this and every event of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation.
