Swimming announces qualifiers for provincial team

Following the wrap up of the short course provincial championships in Gander last weekend, provincial president, Carl Smith announced the names of 11 swimmers who had qualified for Swimming Newfoundland and Labradors provincial team.

Using the base entry standard of 700 points on the world performance standards, each of the swimmers named has to attain that standard in at least one event during the championships to earn a spot on the provincial team. The world points rating system allows for comparisons between the different swimming events for both male and female swimmers of different ages. World points are commonly used nationally and internationally for team selection and swimmer rankings.

To maintain their spot on the provincial team for more than one year, the swimmers named here will have to re-qualify at 750 points at next years short course championships. Other swimmers will have a chance to qualify for the team at the provincial long course championships at the end of May, and at one other meet during the summer.

These provincial team members, plus others who will qualify over the next months, will make up the core group of swimmers for the team that will attend the Canada Summer Games set for London, Ontario in August 2001.

The provincial swim team members, their clubs and coaches are:
