Minister announces Attractions Canada Awards Program for 2001

Sandra Kelly, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Recreation (Acting), is pleased to announce that government will participate in the Attractions Canada Awards Program again in 2001. This national endeavour, spearheaded by Montreal-based Attractions Canada in partnership with the Canadian Tourism Commission, the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, Canadian Heritage and others, highlights and promotes activities, events and attractions to encourage Canadians to be tourists in their own country.

"This program provides a great opportunity for us to showcase Newfoundland and Labradors unique attractions," said Minister Kelly. "The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation greatly values this program as an opportunity to honour some of the most outstanding, world-class attractions that our province boasts, and is pleased to partner with Attractions Canada in identifying those events and attractions which are worthy of national recognition."

The Attractions Canada Awards Program has six categories for which the public and tourism industry can nominate provincial attractions and events, including outdoor sites, indoor sites, cultural events, sports events, new attractions and national or international attractions. The winners of the six provincial awards will subsequently be submitted to a national competition, and national winners will be used in the Attractions Canada awareness campaigns for the ensuing year.

The deadline for applications is February 10, 2001 and may be obtained by contacting:
