Government announces funding for Festival 500

Sandra Kelly, Acting Minister for Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and Jim Walsh, parliamentary assistant to Minister Kelly, today announced $195,000 for the 2001 Festival 500 program of events.

"The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation continues to be a proud supporter of Festival 500," said Minister Kelly. "This event was first produced in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1997 as a component of the Cabot celebrations, and it has evolved into one of the most unique arts events in the world. Government will contribute funding to this project as a part of the Marconi anniversary, and we look forward to welcoming performers from around the world as we celebrate an event which holds great international significance. We will be announcing plans for the Marconi celebrations in the near future."

Mr. Walsh announced governments contribution at a news conference held by Festival 500 to announce major corporate sponsors supporting the 2001 Festival. Festival 500 is scheduled to take place in St. Johns from July 1, 2001 to July 8, 2001. A festival component will also take place in Labrador from May 24, 2001 to May 27, 2001 and in the Western Region of the province from June 27, 2001 to June 30, 2001.

"This event speaks volumes for the dynamic arts community of Newfoundland and Labrador and the reputation we have received world-wide for our love of music, as well as our hospitality," said Mr. Walsh.
