NLIS 2 October 23, 2000 (Tourism, Culture and Recreation) Funding for Winterset Award Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced funding in the amount of $50,000 for the Winterset Award, to be made available on a matching basis with funds raised from within the private sector. "The Winterset Award has been established to honour the memory of award-winning Newfoundland social historian, Sandra Gwyn," said Minister Furey. "This funding will serve as a memoriam to an outstanding Newfoundlander and more important, will help promote the cultural heritage of our province as it lends support to the literary community." The award is designed to encourage and promote excellence in all genres of writing, and will be awarded annually to an outstanding literary work. Recipients of the award, whose work will be adjudicated by a three-panel jury, will receive a prize of $5,000. The Winterset Award is sponsored by the Sandra Fraser Gwyn Foundation. Ms. Gwyn, an ardent advocate and promoter of Newfoundland and Labrador culture, passed away on May 26, 2000. Some of Ms. Gwyn�s accomplishments included receiving an honourary degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, being made a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council�s Hall of Fame and being appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. Winterset was the name of the house on Winter Avenue in St. John�s where Ms. Gwyn lived until age 11.
