Minister accelerates work for Main River Heritage designation

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced today that work will be accelerated to achieve Canadian Heritage River status for Main River.

"My department and the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods have started a consultative process with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper, Main River Environmental Coalition and the tourism industry to make sure the Main River corridor contains the natural features necessary to receive designation as a Heritage River," said Furey. "The Canadian Heritage Rivers System program provides a vehicle for the recognition and conservation of those rivers deemed to be of outstanding Canadian heritage. After the consultative process, the provincial government will submit the necessary documentation to the national designating organization to finalize the process."

There are three categories of Heritage Value Guidelines under which a river may be nominated for Heritage River Status including Natural Heritage Value, Human Heritage Value and Recreational Heritage Value. The Main River has been nominated under two categories, Natural Heritage and Recreation Values.

"Moving forward on the Main Rivers designation as a Canadian Heritage River is in the best interest of all stakeholders, and we intend to play an active role in seeing that this happens as quickly as possible," says Kevin Sheahan, Vice-President and General Manager of Corner Brook Pulp and Paper.

"Government is committed to protecting and preserving outstanding and representative features of our natural heritage, not only in the Main River area but throughout the province, and this nomination for Heritage River status is an important part of this process," added Furey.
