What�s new this summer at
the Provincial Historic Sites and Museums

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced the seasonal opening of the Provincial Historic Sites (PHS), which will remain open until October 6, 2000.

"We are very fortunate to live in a place with such a rich history, and the various properties throughout the province which preserve the integrity of our history are a vital part of our culture," said Minister Furey. "These sites and museums help us to learn about and enjoy our culture as well as educate the thousands of travellers that visit us annually. Several of the existing Provincial Historic Sites and Museums have been enhanced and refurbished, and there are several new features for this years operating season, all of which are highlighted in our new Provincial Historic Sites and Museums promotional brochures."

Some notable attractions at the Provincial Historic Sites for this operating season include:

Later this summer, the public are welcome to experience a unique and exciting event at the Bonavista Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site and see how a part of our heritage is restored, as the dome is removed and restored;

Everyone is encouraged to visit Quidi Vidi Battery Provincial Historic Site and see the refurbished gundeck or take part in the new living history summer program carried out in partnership with the Signal Hill Tattoo;

See the latest addition to the Trinity waterfront, a recently constructed building representing a traditional merchant premises which now houses the new Rising Tide Theatre;

The Commissariat House Provincial Historic Site in St. John�s features a new display in the Interpretation Centre and colourful additions to its period garden;

Newman Wine Vaults Provincial Historic Site will be newly opened to the public later this summer and will be operated by the Newfoundland Historic Trust; and

A new Beothuk statue, a project of the Beothuk Institute, will be unveiled at Boyd�s Cove Beothuk Interpretation Centre on July 8, 2000.

Some events scheduled at the Provincial Museums include:

Possessions: The Material World of Newfoundland Fishing Families, a travelling exhibit of The Newfoundland Museum in St. John�s, will be on display until January 14, 2001;

Newfoundland Bird Paintings: Roger Tory Peterson will be on display at The Newfoundland Museum from July 27 through to October 29, 2000. This exhibit will feature 33 original watercolour paintings from the book entitled, Birds of Newfoundland, published by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1951;

Southern Newfoundland Seamen�s Museum in Grand Bank displays the largest outdoor mural in Atlantic Canada, as well as The Newfoundland Museum�s travelling exhibit, Business of Makin� the Paper, which will be on display until October 20, 2000

Newfoundland - A Place Called Home, a travelling exhibit by the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, will be on display at the Mary March Regional Museum in Grand Falls-Windsor until October 20, 2000; and

The Loggers� Exhibit in Grand Falls-Windsor, which recreates life at an early 20th-century logging camp, is open until September 16, 2000.
