Efforts to protect Piping Plover at J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that approximately 300 metres of the one kilometre beach at J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park has been closed to the public.

"Closure to this portion of the beach is necessary in order to help protect the Piping Plover, an endangered shorebird which has made its home in J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park," said Furey. "The restricted area is the breeding and foraging area for birds, so it is crucial that we have the publics cooperation and respect for the area which has been closed."

Staff at J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park have endeavoured to separate the activities of the public and the Piping Plover at the beach, both of which are of equal importance to the park. There is still a remaining 700 kilometres of shoreline for the public to enjoy, and ATV users are requested to remain on the T-Railway corridor when passing through the park. Individuals who violate these restrictions will be charged under Section 9, Subsection 1 of the Provincial Parks Act.
