Safe Ashore

Written by Anne Chislett and Janet Michael is the story of a modern day Newfoundland family, who operates a bed and breakfast business on Newfoundlands Northern Peninsula. The family who, prior to the cod moratorium, made their living from the sea, has turned to tourism (through taking work as Viking interpreters at the LAnse aux Meadows National Historic site, and opening their home to tourists).

They take us back through history to glance at the lives of their ancestors in the early 1800s. Because some of the family members are so caught up in the Norse sagas through their work at L Anse aux Meadows, the play also takes us back to Leif Ericsons landing at and his half-sister Freydiss voyage to Vinland.

Featuring an all-Newfoundland cast, including Deidre Gillard-Rowlings, Robert Thorne and Lawrence Barry, and directed by Janet Michael with musical direction by Krista Vincent, SAFE ASHORE opens the 2000 Gros Morne Theatre Festival at TNLs WAREHOUSE THEATRE in Cow Head, Gros Morne National Park on June 3.

The show dates are:

WAREHOUSE THEATRE -
June 3, 8, 10, 13, 15, 19, 22, 26, 29; July 2, 6, 13, 20: August 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.

A two-run will be held at the LSPU Hall in St. Johns on July 24-25 and will be part of the Resource Centre for the Arts Festival 5.
