Snorri
Explores Vinland

July 1-28, 2000

In the fall of 1998, an American-built vessel embarked on an epic journey that hearkened back 1,000 years to the trans-Atlantic crossing of Leif Ericson. Led by Hodding Carter and sponsored by Lands End Direct Merchants, Viking Voyage 1000 saw the Snorri leave Greenland and using just sail and oars, trace Leif Ericsons journey, arriving at LAnse aux Meadows National Historic Site in the fall of 1998.

In the summer of 2000, some of the original crew will return to Newfoundland and Labrador to participate in Snorri Explores Vinland. The vessel will begin a voyage at Woody Point on July 1 and will travel north, stopping at a number of Northern Peninsula ports before joining the other replica Viking vessels that comprise Viking Sail 2000, arriving at Norstead on July 28.

At each of the scheduled stops, the Snorri and her crew will be greeted by local residents, dignitaries, and tourists. Each stop will feature an arrival ceremony and special events such as community dinners, dances, or parades. At each port, there will be opportunities for local involvement, as a boy and girl will be chosen to act as Vikings for a day. In addition, two people in each area will be chosen to serve as part of Snorris crew as she sails to the next stop.

Below is a listing of the official ports of call for Snorri Explores Vinland:

July 1, Woody Point;
July 2, Cow Head;
July 6, Port Saunders;
July 10, Reefs Harbour;
July 14, St. Barbe;
