Viking Sail 2000

On July 28, 2000, the worlds attention will be focused on the shores of the only known Viking settlement in North America, as a fleet of up to 12 replica Viking vessels converge on the very shores that Leif Ericson and his crew did 1,000 years ago.

Gathering at Red Bay, these vessels will sail across the Strait of Belle Isle to Norstead to join in celebrations commemorating the 1000th anniversary of European presence in the New World. While en route, these vessels will experience the same natural wonders, like gigantic icebergs and whales, that their predecessors did a full millennia ago.

The event will culminate on July 28, 2000, when the fleet led by the Islendingur from Iceland, makes its grand arrival at Norstead, near LAnse aux Meadows National Historic Site, the only authenticated Norse site in North America.

Norstead is a newly-created port of trade reflecting the Viking Age, which will allow visitors to step back in time and, with the help of local and international re-enactors, explore themes such as Viking food and culture. While at Norstead, the ships will participate in a week of sailing activity and competitions in the area, before returning to their home ports.

The Viking Trail Tourism Association invites you to Make the Journey, and join us as we celebrate 1,000 years of history in Newfoundland and Labrador.
