Norstead

Cast your mind back in time and greet the first Vikings to set forth from the north countries in search of a new land. These were a strong willed people who overcame great adversity. Now you too can Make the Journey in the summer of 2000 and visit Norstead, near LAnse aux Meadows National Historic Site in Newfoundland, Canada.

Norstead, a historical representation of a Viking port of trade, will transport the visitor back to the Viking Age. There will be both local and international re-enactors and at any given time, up to 100 people will be living on the site, including a core group of 45 local people who are being trained as historical interpreters.

From July 17 to September 8, 2000, activities will be ongoing. Weekly themes include music, Viking weddings and battles. Experience traditional Viking food and culture, learn about boat building, weapon making, one-needle knitting, wool spinning, weaving, gardening, iron-working, and maybe even make a trade or two!

On July 28, 2000, a fleet of Viking ships will converge on LAnse aux Meadows. This represents the peak period for the Norstead site as ships from around the world will converge on the village and spend several days. Make the Journey in the year 2000 and come Viking with us.
