Funding for 2003 Labrador Winter Games in addition to
sport and recreation increase announced in Budget 2000

Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Charles Furey today elaborated on the increased funding in Budget 2000 for sport and recreation.

Mr. Furey said: "There has been some confusion that funding for the 2003 Labrador Winter Games has been included in the $500,000 increase the government allocated to sport and recreation for the province in the new budget year. The $500,000 identified in Budget 2000 for recreation and sport is in addition to the same amount that the government earlier announced for the 2003 Labrador Winter Games.

"Although there are many needs in terms of recreation and sport within the province, my department will be exploring in the next several weeks a number of options in terms of the allocation of this funding.

"Support for the provinces athletes, coaches and officials is a top priority for my department as we all realize that recreation and sport play a vital role in the lives of all residents of our province, especially our youth."
