Minister announces grant in support of amateur athletes, coaches and officials

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced a $5,000 grant in support of the provinces amateur athletes, coaches and officials. This funding will go toward the annual scholarship program which is administered by Sport Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Every year the department assists Sport Newfoundland and Labrador with a contribution for the scholarship program as a part of governments ongoing commitment to amateur sports in the province. The scholarships are available to athletes, coaches and officials attending post-secondary institutions throughout the province," said Mr. Furey. "We have many talented athletes in Newfoundland and Labrador, and it is important that we support them in their quest to achieve academic and athletic excellence. I am fully aware of the tremendous sacrifice and personal commitment that our athletes, coaches and officials make in trying to achieve their respective goals."

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador matches the government contribution, making the total value of the scholarship program $10,000. This years successful recipients will be announced in the spring of 2000, where Sport Newfoundland and Labrador will distribute approximately 20 bursaries valued at $500 each.
