NOTE TO EDITORS:

Members of the media are invited to attend the official opening "Possessions: The Material World of Newfoundland Fishing Families" - a new travelling exhibition at the Newfoundland Museum. Until very recently, the Newfoundland economy was almost entirely based on the fishery. Newfoundland fishing families had to do an astonishingly wide range of work and be exceptionally self-reliant in order to make a living in one of the worlds most challenging environments. Everything from fish hooks to household furnishings often had to be made by hand.

This event will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23, at the Newfoundland Museum, 285 Duckworth Street, St. Johns.

Media contact: Karen Walsh, Public Programming Coordinator, (709) 729-0917.
