(Minister Responsible for Labrador)

Coastal Labrador transportation committee established

Ernest McLean, Minister Responsible for Labrador, and Yvonne Jones, MHA Cartwright-Lanse au Clair, today announced that there will be a committee established to make recommendations on the future transportation needs in coastal Labrador following completion of the Red Bay to Cartwright coastal link road.

In 1997, government announced $130 million to construct a road from Red Bay to Cartwright, which is scheduled to be completed in 2003. The province confirmed today its commitment to consult with the local communities regarding the regions future transformation requirements.

"This input can be best obtained through the establishment of a committee comprised of representatives from the sub-zones of the southeastern Aurora Development Corporation," said Minister McLean. "Upon completion of the coastal Labrador road there will be a number of transportation challenges that will need to be addressed and it is important that those communities most affected be given an opportunity to provide government with recommendations on how these challenges can be best addressed."

Minister McLean indicated that the terms of reference for the committee will be jointly developed by government and local stakeholders. It is anticipated that the terms of reference will be completed by the end of the month, after which representatives will be appointed and work will commence.

"I am confident that this committee will provide government with sound recommendations to improve the transportation requirements for all residents of coastal Labrador," said Ms. Jones.
