Canada Career Week - a time to explore

Julie Bettney, Minister of Human Resources and Employment, announced the beginning of Canada Career Week for the province today. From October 29 - November 4 people from across the province are taking the opportunity to find out about trends in the labour market, pursue career interests, attend career fairs, talk to role models, or volunteer in their dream job for a day.

"The theme of Canada Career Week 2000 is Explore Your Future," said Minister Bettney. "Its a time to think about where you are in your own career, and where you would like to be in the future. Its also a time to encourage and support others in their efforts to realize their career goals."

Minister Bettney provided details on how people in Newfoundland and Labrador could take advantage of her departments resources to explore their own career choices.

"The Department of Human Resources and Employment has a number of valuable resources that help people investigate and research career options," said Minister Bettney. "The great thing about these resources is they are open to everyone in the province and are available year- round."

The Newfoundland and Labrador WorkinfoNET (NLWIN) and the Career Information Hotline provide career planning and employment information for residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.

These services offer information including labour market trends, job searching and recruiting, self employment, current work issues as well as other employment topics. NLWIN can be accessed at: www.gov.nl.ca/nlwin. Through NLWIN users may also gain access to national and international resources. The Career Information Hotline puts callers in touch with people who can help answer career related questions and concerns as well as provide details on employment programs and supports. The hotline can be reached by calling toll free 1-800-563-6600.

"These are just two of our resources that can offer people of any age the information they need to make informed decisions when planning their career," Bettney said. "I invite everyone to explore our employment and career supports as we celebrate this special week."
