Senior government appointments announced

Premier Brian Tobin is pleased to announce the appointment of Beaton Tulk, Minister of Development and Rural Renewal to the post of Deputy Premier, effective immediately. The deputy premier will assist the premier with the running of government.

"Beaton Tulk has proven himself as government house leader to be an effective and conscientious leader in the House of Assembly," said Premier Tobin. "The people of Newfoundland and Labrador will be well served by having him as deputy premier."

As well, Premier Tobin today announced the appointment of Art Reid as Chief of Staff, Office of the Premier. Mr. Reid brings two decades of government experience, both at the municipal and provincial levels, to this senior administrative function.

"Art Reids years of experience and proven track record as a member of government and as an organizer, together with his knowledge of the bureaucracy, makes him well suited to take on the task of chief of staff," said the premier. "I look forward to working with him in his new capacity."

Out-going chief of staff Gerry Glavine will assume the post of president of the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation.

"I wish to thank Gerry Glavine for four years of superior service at the executive level," noted the premier. "Gerry directed my office through the early days of the administration, and has played an important hands-on role through four years of tremendous change in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"These appointments are part of a series of moves aimed at renewing the government team as we approach mid-term in our second mandate, " said Premier Tobin. "We must always seek fresh ideas and new voices to be a responsive, forward-thinking government."

These further changes become effective August 28, 2000.
