Earliest release ever of Travel Guide - Minister achieves goals set out in spring

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today released the 2000 Travel Guide for Newfoundland and Labrador, making it the earliest ever release of a Travel Guide for the province.

"In the spring of this year, I made a personal commitment to vacationers, the tourism industry and the province as a whole, to ensure the timely release of the 2000 Travel Guide. I am extremely proud to say that the guide is completed, printed and ready for distribution," said Furey. "Last year there were valid concerns surrounding the delayed release of the guide, and I am pleased that through the combined efforts of the department and industry, we were able to overcome problems of years past, and have the guide ready before the dawn of the new millennium."

This year new guidelines were put into place by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation to ensure that all pertinent information was received and organized by a date that would ensure early release of the 2000 Travel Guide. This year, the cover of the guide focuses on the Vikings! 1000 Years: Make the Journey promotion.

"The year 2000 is the start of an exciting new millennium, and I am very confident that Newfoundland and Labrador will be a destination for record numbers of travelers. We will enjoy a calendar of events with a focus on the Great Northern Peninsula, commemorating the Viking legacy in the province, and their first arrival to North America at L'Anse aux Meadows, 1000 years ago," said Furey. "We are inviting the entire world to join with us as we re-live this significant piece of our history and culture. We expect our tourism numbers to continue on the growth trend of the past number of years, indeed to easily surpass those numbers, and this is one important reason why it is especially important we have this literature ready for the public."

The guide will be available for mass distribution on January 4, 2000.
